High School
In baseball yesterday…
- Calumet split their doubleheader against Marquette, falling 1-0, then coming back for a 7-4 win. In the opener, Alex Brennan of the Sentinels tossed a no-hitter. Darin Berg allowed just three hits, but took the tough loss on the mound. In the nightcap, Charlie Halonen’s three-run triple in the fifth inning broke a 4-4 tie.
- Houghton edged Hancock 5-4 in nine innings.
- In the Division Four District 97 playoffs…
- Jeffers scored eight runs in the first inning, added five runs in the second, and mercied Ontonagon 13-0. Cody Turner, Levi Kinnunen and Lane Johnson held the Gladiators to just one hit.
- Wakefield-Marenisco blanked Ironwood 7-0.
- The tourney will wrap up Friday in Ironwood. Lake Linden-Hubbell will face Wakefield-Marenisco in the first semifinal. Jeffers will play Ewen-Trout Creek in the second. The winners will then play in the championship game.
In softball…
- Calumet routed Gwinn 19-1 in a three-inning game. Lena Myhren had a home run, two doubles and a single for the Copper Kings. Molly Erkkila and Kaydence Christopherson each had three hits.
- Hancock then mercied Gwinn 16-0 in four innings. Lucy Biekkola struck out 9 to get the win. Chloe Bastian had two hits, and Alice Larson drove in three runs for the Bulldogs.
- Lake Linden-Hubbell swept Westwood 8-2 and 16-4. In the opener, Emily Jokela struck out 13, and had a double and a triple. Ashlyn Steves homered, and Cleo Milkey and Payton Goldsworthy each had three hits. Goldsworthy struck out nine over five innings in the nightcap, and hit a home run. Jokela hit for the cycle, and Steves had three hits.
- The Division Four District 97 playoffs opened with Ironwood dispatching Iron Mountain 18-3. That tournament concludes Friday at Ironwood. The Red Devils take on Ontonagon in the first semifinal. Gogebic faces Forest Park in the second. The title game will follow.
In track and field…
- Negaunee swept the Dan Juntilla Invitational at Calumet yesterday. Both Houghton teams finished second, and both Calumet teams fourth. On the boys side, Matt Frantti of the Copper Kings won the shot put and the discus throw. On the girls side, Houghton’s Emilyn Fay took the shot put and the pole vault. See full results here.

- Houghton’s season ended with a 2-1 loss to Boyne City in a district semifinal.
In softball today…
- Hancock plays one game at Calumet at 5:00.
- Jeffers entertains Westwood.
In golf…
- The U.P. Division One Boys Finals will be played today at Sage Run in Bark River.
- The U.P. Division One Girls Finals will be staged at Sweetgrass in Harris.
- The U.P. Division Three Coed Finals will be played at the Escanaba Country Club.
The Division Two Coed Finals will be played Friday.
MLB
The Tigers won their third straight game last night, shutting down the Giants 3-1. Jack Flaherty struck out eight over six shutout innings, allowing just two hits. Wenceel Pérez came off the injured list, and hit his first home run of the season in his first at-bat of the season. Riley Greene had three hits.
The Tigers host the Giants again today. Jackson Jobe will start against Landen Roupp. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit made room on the roster for Perez by putting Matt Vierling back on the injured list. He’s suffering from shoulder inflammation.
Christian Yelich’s grand slam in the bottom of the 10th inning powered the Brewers to a 5-1 victory over the Red Sox. Yelich had scored the tying run in the bottom of the ninth on a Sal Frelick single to extend the game.
The Brewers host the Red Sox again this afternoon. Freddy Peralta will pitch against Brayan Bello.
NBA
The Pacers got past the Knicks 130-121 last night. Indiana leads the Eastern Conference final 3-1.
The Timberwolves visit the Thunder this evening. Oklahoma City is up 3-1 in the Western Conference final.
NHL
The Oilers downed the Stars 4-1 last evening. Edmonton takes a 3-1 lead in the Western Conference final.
The Panthers visit the Hurricanes tonight. Florida leads the Eastern Conference final 3-1.
