Houghton County sheriff investigates a fire incident in Tapiola.
On Sunday the Houghton County sheriff was dispatched to a residence in Tapiola at 7:40 am for a domestic altercation.
Deputies were told 39-year-old Alex Paavola had threatened to burn down his parents’ Tapiola home. His parents fled to a nearby neighbor’s residence to call for help. Upon arrival, officials found the home fully engulfed in flames. Deputies preceded in establishing a perimeter around the property and began a search for Paavola.
After the fire was extinguished a subsequent investigation of the structure found a male individual deceased inside. Officials were able to identify the individual as 39-year-old Alex Paavola. The incident remains under investigation.
Otter Lake Fire, Chassell Township Fire, and Huron Town Fire first responders were assisted on the scene by the Houghton County sheriff’s office, Michigan state police the state fire marshal, and the Houghton County medical examiner.
