On Memorial Day every year, the calumet community has come together at Lake View Cemetery to remember the veteran’s sacrifice. This year’s turnout was like many others, with hundreds of residents in attendance for the Calumet VFW Post 3900 service. But today’s memorial marked a special unveiling to remember veterans at Heros’ Hill in the Lake View Cemetery. Post member Oscar Niemela says another member; Rick Isaacson, came to him with the idea to build an official sign marking the site for his brother and other veterans buried in the veteran’s plot.
And he always called it Heros’ Hill when it came out here to visit. And Rick told me, said, in memory of Neil, wouldn’t it be nice to have a sign out there that depicts the new part of the veteran cemetery that says Heros’ Hill. So, we got the wheels in motion, and we got ahold of Gene Larochelle and other people from the post and decided that let’s tackle this project and get it done and get the mission completed. – Oscar Niemela, Post member, VFW 3900
The post received a grant from the Aspirus Keweenaw Foundation and raised funds to support the project. Post members thank industrial graphics for their work to complete the new sign in under two weeks. Post member Rich Isaacson and Lake Linden Post 90 member Gene Larochelle added it was a joy to see so much of the community out in support of Memorial Day services and to view the new marker.
The honoring and celebration of our veterans in this cemetery goes back to the 1920’s. A celebration program has been a part of the day going back that far. So, what you see today is a celebration of what’s been going on in Calumet for over one hundred years. – Gene Larochelle, Post member, Lake Linden VFW Post 90
I have lots of heroic friends on the hill, but I have two in my life. My father Uno, a World War Two veteran. And my brother Neil, he’s buried a couple plots over from him on top of the hill up there. So, I am very honored to be a member of this committee. – Richard Isaacson, Post member, VFW 3900
This year’s National Day of Remembrance honors all veterans who serve and have passed, on foreign soil or at home. The Lake View Cemetery in Calumet is the final resting place of close to 200 veterans on Hero’s Hill and many more throughout the cemetery. VFW post 3900 members maintain heros’ hill and the veteran’s plot in the cemetery.
