High School
Jeffers High School has named its top athletes from the Class of 2025. Taylor Heinonen was a four-year varsity basketball starter, and team captain in her senior year. She earned Copper Mountain Conference honors in both basketball and volleyball. Cody Turner has earned conference honors in baseball, hockey and football. He holds several school baseball records, and recorded the Jets’ first-ever no-hitter this spring. He helped the hockey team reach the state semifinals.
Hancock High School is looking for some new coaches. Job postings have been released for head coaches for the boys and girls basketball teams and the hockey team, along with coaches for middle school football and freshman volleyball. For job descriptions and application instructions, click here.
College Basketball
The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team is headed to one of the nation’s premiere early-season events. The Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Classic will be held November 1st and 2nd in Lakeland, Florida. Ten teams will each play two games. The Huskies will open against Dallas Baptist, and close against Lenoir-Rhyne.
MLB
The Tigers dropped their second straight game last night, falling 3-1 to the Guardians. Jackson Jobe gave up just two runs over five innings, but suffered his first loss of the season. Spencer Torkelson homered.
The Tigers host the Guardians again tonight. Casey Mize is expected to return from the injured list to start against Luis L. Ortiz. Coverage will begin at 6:50 on 99.3 The Lift.
Matt Vierling is back with the Tigers, after spending time on the injured list. Detroit sent reliever Sean Guenther down to Toledo yesterday. They also assigned catcher Tomás Nido to the Mud Hens, after he cleared waivers.
Abner Uribe’s wild pitch allowed the Pirates to score the winning run in the bottom of the 10th in a 6-5 victory over the Brewers. Milwaukee took one-run leads in the top of the ninth and the top of the 10th, but couldn’t hold them. William Contreras homered.
The Brewers visit the Pirates again today. Quinn Priester will pitch against Mitch Keller.
Milwaukee has brought pitcher Aaron Ashby off the injured list, and returned pitcher Carlos Rodriguez to Nashville.
NBA
The Pacers downed the Knicks 114-109 last night. Indiana takes a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference final.
The Thunder visit the Timberwolves tonight. Oklahoma City leads the Western Conference final 2-0.
NHL
The Oilers blanked the Stars 3-0 last evening. The Western Conference final is tied 1-1.
The Hurricanes visit the Panthers tonight. Florida is up 2-0 in the Eastern Conference final.
