Memorial Day takes a step back to remember the men and women serving the nation, and who gave the ultimate sacrifice. This Memorial Day the Keweenaw Peninsula celebrates a strong veteran community.
Throughout the region ceremonies on Monday are led by VFW halls and American Legion posts. These ceremonies hold special meaning to not just the families of servicemembers, but for veterans themselves.
The Calumet VFW Post 3900 will place more than 1,000 American flags at gravesites this weekend. And the group plans to unveil a new sign, marking Hero’s Hill in the Lakeview Cemetery. The patch of field designated for the area’s veterans has long been maintained by the VFW post.
On Monday the VFW 3900 will unveil the hero hill sign after a ceremony starting at 11 am.
The Lake View Cemetery in Calumet is located on the Veterans Memorial Highway, M203.
