High School
In high school baseball yesterday…
- Houghton dropped a pair to Negaunee, 12-6 and 7-5. The Miners scored eight runs in the first inning of the opener. Latham Salmi drove in two for the Gremlins. Hudson Markham and Eli Heathman each had two hits.
- Calumet took two from Westwood. Darin Berg drove home Liam Pomroy with the game winner in a 5-4 extra-inning opener. Tyler Halonen got the win on the mound. Lyle Lasanen got the win as the Kings took the nightcap 5-2.
- Gwinn canceled their games against Hancock at the last minute, so the Bulldogs set up a quick single replacement game against Jeffers. Caleb Isaacson singled home the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh to give Hancock a 7-6 victory. The Bulldogs had tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Ben and Chase Keranen each had two hits for the ‘Dogs. Brogan Turner and Nick Andrews each had two for the Jets.
In softball…
- Lake Linden-Hubbell swept Calumet 14-11 and 9-5. Emily Jokela struck out 16 in the opener, but also gave up 14 hits. The Lakes collected 14 hits as well. Payton Goldsworthy had a double and a triple for Lake Linden. Jokela had three hits, drove in four runs, and scored three times. Molly Erkkila and Kaydence Christofferson each had three hits for the Copper Kings, and Chloe Coppo had a double and a triple. Goldsworthy struck out 10 to get the win in the nightcap. She also drove in seven runs, with a single, two doubles and a homer. Coppo and Clare Ruonovaara each had two hits for Calumet.
- Hancock split their twinbill against Negaunee. The Bulldogs dropped the opener 9-1. Sadie Biekkola had two of Hancock’s four hits. The Bulldogs came back to take the second game 8-7. Emily L’Esperance’s two-run double in the bottom of the seventh brought the ‘Dogs from behind to get the win. Brooke Koskela hit a three-run homer.
The Houghton girls soccer team opened the playoffs with a 4-2 win over Grayling. Cheyenne Laplander scored all four Gremlins goals. Aila Weeks had two assists. Houghton will face Boyne City Tuesday in a 6:00 game at Boyne Falls.

At the Skyline Conference track and field meet, the Forest Park girls finished as runners-up, and the boys placed fourth. Ava Fischer won the girls 100 and 300-meter hurdles, and Elsie Williams claimed the long jump. Kevin Giuliani took the boys shot put and discus throw. See full results here.

MLB
The Tigers shut down the Cardinals 5-1 yesterday. On a bullpen day, six Detroit relievers combined to hold St. Louis to just five hits, while striking out nine. Spencer Torkelson and Dillon Dingler each had two hits and an RBI.
The Tigers host the Guardians tonight. Jack Flaherty will start against Tanner Bibee. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit center fielder Parker Meadows has begun a rehab stint with the Lakeland Flying Tigers. He’s recovering from a nerve problem in his throwing arm.
Adley Rutschman’s three-run homer off Tyler Alexander in the top of the 11th powered the Orioles to an 8-4 victory over the Brewers yesterday. Caleb Durbin forced extra innings when he drove home Sal Frelick in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game.
The Brewers visit the Pirates tonight. Carlos Rodriguez is expected to start for Milwaukee against Mike Burrows.
NBA
The Pacers opened the NBA Eastern Conference finals with a 138-135 overtime win over the Knicks last night.
The Western Conference final resumes tonight, as the Timberwolves visit the Thunder. Oklahoma City leads that set 1-0.
NHL
The Stars doubled up the Oilers 6-3 in the opening game of the Western Conference final last night.
The Panthers visit the Hurricanes tonight. Florida leads the Eastern Conference final 1-0.
There are multiple reports that former Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill will be named as the new head coach of the Blackhawks.
