High School
In high school baseball yesterday…
- Ewen-Trout Creek outscored Lake Linden-Hubbell 21-13 in the opening game of their doubleheader. Caden Besonen drove in five runs for the Panthers. Rex Strong and Austin Gordon each had three hits and three RBI. Brodie Rust, Tyler Axford and Wes Mahrley each drove in three for the Lakes. Game two ended in an 11-11 tie. Jamis Scott powered the Panthers with four hits and four RBI. Besonen added three hits and three RBI. Rust had three hits for the Lakes.
- Jeffers and Gogebic split their twinbill. The Jets claimed the opener 5-0. Cody Turner allowed just two hits over seven innings, and struck out 10. He also had a double and a triple. Jayce Simons’ walk-off single gave the Miners a 7-6 comeback win in the nightcap. Turner had three hits for the Lakes.
- Ontonagon and Ironwood also split their games. The Red Devils got four RBI from Ethan Gallo in a 15-8 victory in game one. Jack Nelson had a couple of hits for the Gladiators. Ontonagon got just two hits in game two, but pulled out a 6-5 victory.
In softball…
- Houghton took two mercy rule wins from Ishpeming, 17-3 and 12-2. The Gremlins struck early in game one, plating 12 runs in the first inning. Josie Switzer had three hits and drove in two runs. Ellie Hainault had a home run and a triple, and drove in three. Estella Soumis earned the win. Houghton also took control early in the second contest. Lexi Burns had a triple and a single, and drove in two runs. Josie Switzer also had a triple, and Kia Markham had a double. Moyle got the win.
- Ontonagon dropped a pair to Ironwood, 23-12 and 23-8. Breleigh Lahti homered and drove in six runs for the Red Devils in the opener. Alli Bobula had three hits for the Gladiators. The Devils plated 12 runs in the opening inning of the nightcap. Irelynd McGeshick and Madyson Pantti doubled for Ontonagon.
- Jeffers lost two to the Gogebic Miners, 12-6 and 22-5. The Miners had just four hits in the opener, but took advantage of 13 walks. Naomi Frahm and Meg Ruohonen had two hits each for the Jets, with Frahm collecting four RBI. Jeffers held an early lead in the nightcap, but the Miners scored 14 runs in the sixth inning to take command. Ruohonen homered and tripled for the Jets.
- Lake Linden-Hubbell swept Forest Park 11-0 and 9-2. Emily Jokela struck out 14 in game one. Payton Goldsworthy homered, and Cleo Milkey and Kyara Mills each had two hits for the Lakes. Goldsworthy struck out 18 in game two. Ashlyn Steves had a triple and a home run for Lake Linden. Jokela had a double and a homer, and Lissa Johnson legged out a triple. Khali Woollard and Tessa Bartoszek homered for the Trojans.
At the WestPAC golf championships at Timberstone yesterday…
- Hancock won the boys title, five strokes better than Houghton, and seven ahead of Calumet. Kirby Storm of the Bulldogs and Jack Sayen of the Gremlins each scored a 79. See full results here.
- The girls competition was even closer, with Negaunee finishing two strokes ahead of Hancock, and three ahead of Calumet. Maretta Kangas of the Copper Kings medaled with a 94. See full results here.
At the WestPAC track and field championships at West Iron County yesterday…
- Houghton won the boys meet, with West Iron County fourth, Calumet fifth and Hancock eighth. Luke Hill of the Gremlins won the 800 and 1600-meter runs. Calumet’s Matthew Frantti took the shot put and the discus throw.
- Negaunee breezed to the girls title, with Houghton second, followed by West Iron County, Calumet and Hancock. Houghton’s Tessa Rautiola claimed the 1600 and 3200-meter runs.

Riley Greene doubled home Zach McKinstry with the winning run in the top of the ninth, as the Tigers shaded the Cardinals 5-4 last evening. He and Kerry Carpenter each homered. Tarik Skubal pitched into the sixth, gave up three runs and struck out eight. Will Vest got the win in relief, and Tommy Kahnle earned the save.
The Tigers wrap up that set against the Cardinals this afternoon. Brant Hurter will open against Andre Pallante. Coverage will begin at 12:50 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit brought catcher Jake Rogers off the injured list yesterday. Catcher Tomás Nido was designated for assignment.
The Brewers dispatched the Orioles 5-2 last night. Logan Henderson tossed five shutout innings. Brice Turang, Sal Frelick and Rhys Hoskins homered.
The Brewers conclude that series against the Orioles this afternoon. Chad Patrick will pitch against Tomoyuki Sugano.

The Thunder shut down the Timberwolves 114-88 in the opening game of the Western Conference championship series last night.
The Eastern Conference final commences tonight, as the Knicks host the Pacers.
NHL
The Panthers opened the Eastern Conference championship series with a 5-2 victory over the Hurricanes last evening.
The Western Conference series begins tonight, as the Oilers visit the Stars.
