Breakwater Federal Credit Union continues to educate youth in the Copper Country and improve financial literacy.
Last week the Breakwater Federal Credit Union stopped in at the L’Anse High School and set up a fast-paced simulation at the first Financial Literacy Fair. The event invited upperclassmen to learn about budgeting, decision-making, and how to gain financial independence.
During the activity, students stepped into the real world to make simulated decisions for a mock monthly budget. Each was given the monthly salary of an American worker to budget with, Throughout the activity students were met with big financial decisions and were in charge of allocating their funds where it was needed to cover regular and surprise expenses. The program also taught students the importance of long-term planning and opened conversations about financial priorities.
Events such as the Financial Literacy Fair in L’Anse or the storytime in April help teach young people basic principles of budgeting and financial planning. These programs empower students to make smart decisions with their money, either from an allowance for chores around the house to a first job and even into their careers and adulthood.
