High School
At the second annual John Bostwick Memorial Baseball Tournament Saturday…
- Houghton defeated Calumet 12-7 in the first semifinal. Brycyn Nettel drive in five runs for the Gremlins. Brody Donnelly and Joel Durocher each had three of the 15 Houghton hits, and Durocher stole two bases. Latham Salmi got the win on the mound. Liam Pomroy, Trent Halonen and Darin Berg each had two hits for the Copper Kings.
- Jeffers downed Hancock 8-0 in the second semifinal. Cody Turner’s home run in the bottom of the first inning started the scoring for the Jets, who added five runs in the second inning, and two more in the third. Blake Heltunen scattered five Bulldogs hits over the first four innings to get the win. Cody Turner finished with two hits and three RBI, and Brogan Turner also had a pair of hits. Ben Keranan had two hits for the Bulldogs.
- Jeffers blanked Houghton 4-0 in the title game. Cody Turner and Levi Kinnunen held the Gremlins to just three singles – two by Hudson Markham. Turner earned the win. Rylan Issacson limited the Jets to just two hits over six innings, but was hurt by three Houghton errors, and took the loss.
In softball Saturday…
- Houghton and Lake Linden-Hubbell split a doubleheader. The Lakes took the opener 6-1, powered by a four-run fifth inning. Emily Jokela got the win, allowing three hits and one run over seven innings, and striking out 17. She also drove in two runs. Peyton Goldsworthy had two hits, including a double, for Lake Linden. The Gremlins rebounded for a 13-9 victory in the nightcap, taking control with seven runs in the second inning. Estella Soumis had four hits and drove in five runs for Houghton, and pitched the entire game to get the win. Romy Mattson and Lexi Burns each had two hits. Goldsworthy had three hit and drove in three runs for the Lakes, who also got three hits apiece from Jokela and Ashlyn Steves.
MLB
The Tigers’ four-game win streak ended with a tight 2-1 loss to the Blue Jays Saturday. Spencer Torkelson’s second-inning home run gave Detroit an early lead, but the Tigers managed just three more hits. Reese Olson gave up just one hit over six shutout innings. Toronto scored a run off Will Vest in the eighth to tie the contest, and won it on Ernie Clements’ single off Brenan Hanifee in the bottom of the ninth.
The Tigers visit the Blue Jays again this afternoon. Jackson Jobe will start against José Berríos. Coverage will begin at 1:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Olson left the game after the sixth inning with what appeared to be a cramp in a finger muscle on his throwing hand. It’s not believed to be serious.
The Brewers suffered their fourth shutout in their last five games, falling 7-0 to the Twins. Milwaukee batters collected just three hits. Tobias Myers gave u four runs on 11 hits before leaving in the fourth inning. Minnesota has won 13 straight games.
The Brewers host the Twins again this afternoon. Freddy Peralta will start for the Crew.
NBA
The last NBA conference semifinal will be decided this afternoon, as the Thunder host the Nuggets. That Western Conference series is tied 3-3.
NHL
In NHL conference semifinal play yesterday…
- The Stars advanced with a 2-1 overtime win over the Jets. Dallas wins that Western Conference series 4-2.
Tonight…
- The Maple Leafs host the Panthers. That Eastern Conference set is tied 3-3.
