Since 2008 the Keweenaw Heritage Grant program has awarded 2 million dollars toward efforts that preserve the region’s history. The program has funded a variety of projects and programs over that time, including building preservation in Calumet, interpretive programming at the Keweenaw Heritage Center, and supported museum collections with the Finnish American Heritage Center and Ontoangon County Historical Society.
This year’s program awards more than 124,000 dollars to 13 projects. The largest award in 2025, of 15,000 dollars, supports the preservation, and interpretation efforts with the Houghton County Historical Society, Keweenaw County Historical Society, Michigan Tech Archives, and the Painesdale mine and shaft. The smallest award of 4,400 dollars supports machine repair and build preservation work at the Delaware mine tours.
The Keweenaw Heritage Grant program is distributed by the Keweenaw National Historic Park Advisory Commission.
