Making a first impression matters. Over several months Houghton has had a branding committee hard at work to determine the city’s brand after becoming redevelopment-ready certified by the state of Michigan in 2021.
The branding committee, made of members from the planning commission and city staff, started its work last summer. In that time the city received more than 600 survey responses, and since has analyzed the survey’s data. The committee plans to take the next step and has invited four residents to join the committee’s members.
While the city’s brand offers a fresh face to visitors and invites them to Houghton, residents make up the community and know Houghton best. City manager Eric Waara says residents already know why and what they love about living in Houghton. But the real work starts when sharing that message with visitors, potential new residents, and businesses coming to town. Houghton’s goal is to keep the city’s historic heritage alive while describing what’s new and exciting about living, working, and recreating in the copper country.
