Since establishing the Ontonagon County Cancer Association, the community has raised close to 54,000 dollars to support cancer patients. The association helps those with cancer in the county cover the gaps. It also helps connect patients with loaned-out medical equipment, such as wheelchairs, and supports important cancer research.
Donate to the Ontonagon Cancer Association, you can allocate it if you want it to go into certain areas. We just say they can use our funds wherever they like. It is for financial assistance. There’s an equipment loan closet, so if people need accessories to get them through their chemoradiation, that’s there. We also do research assistance. Each year we pick a certain cancer cause and we give it to a research center or hospital to do some research. And then they do biannual cancer screenings for women and men. – Lisa Lindberg, CEO of Settlers Federal Credit Union and Board Member of OCCA
On Saturday Lindberg, and the OCCA will join the Settlers Federal Credit Union for its annual Cancer Walk, raising awareness and funds for the association. Lindberg says while participation in the walk itself has fluctuated over the years, the area’s business community has provided key support as sponsors.
We do have 54 businesses that help sponsor. This year there were 54, and that’s usually, I believe, about what it is every year. So those are businesses in Ontonagon and Gogebic County that do participate. These funds stay in Ontonagon County, so it’s very nice that Gogebic participates in the cause. So I’m sure they must know someone in the area who has had cancer or is going through it. – Lisa Lindberg, CEO of Settlers Federal Credit Union and Board Member of OCCA
The Settlers Federal Credit Union Cancer Walk in support of the Ontonagon Cancer Association will start at the credit union brnach in Bruce Crossing at 11 am.
They leave the credit union and they head east for about a mile and a half and then they turn and they head north. So we kind of keep them on the back road so it is either paved or gravel roads that they walk on. And then they come back up to 28 and they come back to the credit union and they can have their lunch, their grab and go lunch outside or if they want to take it and be on their way because they have other things to attend to that day, that’s great. So we have inspirational signs along the way that one of our employees has made. So that’s kind of nice. It is inspiring because some people may be tired, whether they’re cancer patients, cancer survivors, or just those who are walking for the cause. It’s always kind of nice to read those. And they’re very colorful along the way. And she’ll tell you how far you’ve gone and how far you have left to go. And so it’s very nice to see those. – Lisa Lindberg, CEO of Settlers Federal Credit Union and Board Member of OCCA
