High School
The Houghton baseball and softball teams both came from behind to win their games in the inaugural Copper Bat competition against Hancock yesterday.
In the softball game, four Gremlins errors in the first inning allowed the Bulldogs to score three runs without a hit. Houghton came back to claim a 6-4 victory, powered by Stella Soumis’ fifth-inning home run. Soumis got the complete-game win in the circle, striking out three, and giving up just four hits. The Gremlins got just two other hits, including a Kia Markham triple. Brooke Koskela had a hit and two RBI for the Bulldogs, and Sophie Freeman had a hit and scored twice.
The baseball contest was scoreless until the fourth inning, and finally went to Houghton 5-4. The Gremlins eventually took the lead in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Jackson VonDoloski. Brycyn Nettell and Brody Donnelly each added an RBI for Houghton. Donnelly and Hudson Markham each had two hits. VonDoloski also pitched the first three innings, striking out seven. Rylan Issacson pitched the final four innings, and got the win. Brayden Larson had two hits and drove in two runs for the Bulldogs. Caleb Isaacson and Luciano Paolu also had two hits each.

In other softball results..
- L’Anse and Jeffers split their doubleheader. The Purple Hornets scored eight runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to seal an 11-1 victory in the opening game. Sylvia Allen had two hits. The Jets took a wild 17-16 win in the nightcap. L’Anse scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the contest. Jeffers’ Meg Ruohonen drove in the game-winner in the top of the seventh, and Janet Mattila retired the Purple Hornets in order in the bottom of the seventh to close the game. Ruohonen and Naomi Frahm each had three hits for the Jets, and Allen collected three for the Purple Hornets.

The U.P. Division Two Regional track and field competition was held yesterday at West Iron County.
- The host Wykons won the girls side. Hancock was fourth, and Jeffers sixth. The Bulldogs got a win from their 4×800 relay team, and Brielle Anderson of the Jets won the long jump.
- Ironwood won the men’s side. West Iron finished third, Hancock fifth and Jeffers sixth.

Both Lake Linden-Hubbell teams dominated the Division Three regional that they hosted. Both Dollar Bay-Tamarack City teams finished third.
- On the boys side, Chassell’s Kalvin Kytta won the 800, 1600 and 3200-meter runs. Niko Amos from Ontonagon took the 110-meter hurdles, and Lake Linden’s Lukas Axford won the 300-meter hurdles. Alex Drew of the Lakes claimed the discus throw, and Nate St. Onge won the pole vault. Dollar Bay’s Baron Colbert took the high jump.
- On the girls side, Emily Jokela of the Lakes won the 100 and 400-meter dashes, and the 100 and 300-meter hurdles. Lake Linden’s Maddy Dudenas won the shot put and the discus throw, and Ashlyn Steves won the pole vault. Ali Bobula from Ontonagon took the 200-meter dash. Bree Besonen from Ewen-Trout Creek won the 800 and 1600-meter runs, and Chassell’s Lily Etelamaki claimed the 3200-meter run. Kiera Isaacson from Dollar Bay won the high jump, and Laila Bell won the long jump.

Justyn-Henry Malloy’s single in the bottom of the ninth drove in the game-winner, as the Tigers shaded the Red Sox 6-5 last night. Tarik Skubal allowed two Boston runs over six innings, but left as the Sox scored three in the seventh. Riley Greene had three hits, including a double and a home run.
The Tigers have today off, and visit the Blue Jays tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit sent struggling third baseman Jace Jung down to Toledo yesterday, and called up outfielder Akil Baddoo. They also got third baseman Gabe Workman back from the White Sox, who had selected him the Rule Five draft over the winter.
The Brewers’ bats woke up, as Milwaukee downed the Guardians 9-5 yesterday. Sal Frelick and Rhys Hoskins homered.
The Brewers also have today off, and welcome the Twins tomorrow night.
Milwaukee starter Jose Quintana has landed on the injured list with a sore shoulder. Starter Aaron Civale turned in another effective rehab appearance at Nashville last night, and could be back with the team next week.
The Brewers added some outfield depth by signing veteran Eddie Rosario to a minor league contract yesterday.

- The Celtics routed the Knicks 127-102. New York leads that Eastern Conference series 3-2.
- The Timberwolves advanced to the Western Conference final with a 121-110 win over the Warriors. Minnesota takes that series 4-1.
