For three years Keweenaw Queers has felt great support from the local community. Growing from a few dozen friends at the park to organizing the third annual Keweenaw Pridefest in Calumet. Organization president Emily Stanton says this year’s theme of community will lead up to June 7th, when Pridefest will collect items for the Calumet Free Fridge.
And it’s a great, completely local non-profit that offers free food and other things like toiletries, toys, winter jackets, boots, and other random miscellaneous things completely free to the community. I believe Ron said that they serve about 500 families. That number could be growing. You’d have to check with Ron. But because we’ll be very close to it at the Calumet Coliseum. This year our theme is community unity. We thought we should show up for the community who shows up for us. – Emily Stanton
PrideFest plans to collect non-perishable food items, and essential non-food items including new socks, lightly used jackets, clothes, kids’ books, and toiletries. Over the weekend Keweenaw Queers hosted an open mic fundraiser for Pridefest and plans to partner with the Keweenaw Roller Derby for a chuck a whipplewheel fundraiser in between matches on May 24th.
