Extending a student’s time learning can open a world of opportunity.
In a recent letter to the community, Gogebic Community College President Chris Pattrito shared some of the benefits of attending a community college and expanding education and knowledge.
Pattrito says the demand for skilled workers continues to grow and has become especially important in Michigan. Regardless of where a student attends post-secondary education, he encourages students to consider continuing their academic journey with a school close to home. Community Colleges offering associate degrees and certification programs, often include small class sizes, with more flexible scheduling to make education more accessible.
Launched in 2024, the Michigan Community College Guarantee can help students connect with financial resources and offer lowered in-district tuition rates for eligible students. Encouraging Students to Choose Community College and Use the Michigan College Guarantee
As the demand for skilled workers grows, it’s more important than ever for Michigan students and families to explore all their higher education options, especially those that provide both quality and affordability. That’s why I want to encourage high school students across Michigan to consider starting their academic journey at one of our outstanding community colleges.
Community colleges offer a wide range of associate degree and certificate programs, small class sizes, and flexible schedules that make education more accessible. Even better, with the Michigan Community College Guarantee, eligible students can now attend an in-district community college tuition-free or at a reduced rate for out-of-district students. This initiative removes a major financial barrier and opens doors to career training, university transfer pathways, and in-demand job skills.
Whether you’re planning to transfer to a four-year university or enter the workforce directly, community college is a smart, debt-free starting point. I urge Michigan high school students to talk to their school counselors, call their local community college’s admissions office, or visit the Michigan College Guarantee website to learn more about how they can take advantage of this incredible opportunity.
