The Keweenaw Unitarian Universalist Fellowship hosts the Houghton County Sheriff to talk about preventing violence in the community. Violence can happen anywhere, from churches to schools or businesses, and educating the public has become a primary tool of law enforcement to prevent unfortunate incidents.
On Sunday Sheriff Josh Saaranen will lead a presentation Preventing Violence in Churches Schools and Businesses, to discuss strategies the community can take to respond to active and potential violence. Saarinen was appointed in 2021 and elected sheriff in 2024.
While still an officer, he was a member of a team providing active shooter and violence training in the region. He also worked as a field deputy and within the county jail before ascending to sheriff. During his career, he has continued the education that was started at Gogebic Community College and Northern Michigan University and has completed advanced programs in homicide in schools, school investigation, and narcotics in school. He also holds train the trainer certification.
