Across lower Michigan volunteer groups have already started cleaning up state highways. Following each spring the Michigan Department of Transportation enjoys the help of residents and groups that pick-up litter along the road and note where larger items are located for MDOT crews.
Each year the Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Peninsula start Adopt a Highway clean-ups a couple weeks later, to allow for winter’s last snow to thaw. The first highway clean-ups in the region for spring will start on Saturday.
During Adopt a Highway Cleanups MDOT wants volunteers to remain safe. Please wear a safety vest while out, bring along a pair of gloves, and adopt highway trash bags. Do not pick up hazardous substances such as drug paraphernalia or dead animals. During highway clean ups make sure to dress for the weather and stay hydrated.
