The United States Army Corps of Engineers announced plans to review the Line 5 tunnel project permit and environmental impact statement timeline.
US Army Corps expects it will publish a draft Environmental Impact statement on May 30th. During the following 30 days, the public will have the opportunity to provide comments on the draft. Detroit district Commander Lt. Col. Wallace Bandeff says public participation is an important step required by the National Environmental Policy Act and ensures a thorough environmental analysis.
The Line 5 project, proposed by Enbridge, plans to construct a tunnel beneath the straits of Mackinaw in Lake Michigan, housing the replacement segment of the pipeline that transports more than 500,000 barrels of crude oil a day between the Alberta Tar Sands and Sarnia Ontario. Based on the project’s current timeline, the United States Army Corps of Engineers anticipates a record of decision by the fall of 2025. Those interested in learning more can find details here
