The Tigers rode a late power surge to a 10-4 victory over the Angels last night. Casey Mize allowed four runs over seven innings, but earned his fifth win of the season when Detroit plated five runs in the top of the eighth. They added three more in the ninth. Javier Báez, Dillon Dingler, Gleyber Torres and Spencer Torkelson homered.
The Tigers continue that series in Anaheim tonight. Tarik Skubal will pitch against José Soriano. Coverage will begin at 9:10 on 99.3 The Lift.
Kenta Maeda is no longer a Tiger. Maeda was in the second year of a two-year, $24-million contract. He struggled badly last season, and fared even worse this summer. The team designated him for assignment yesterday, and called reliever Tyler Owens up from Toledo.
Andrew Chafin has also left the Tigers. The reliever signed a minor league deal with an opt-out clause this spring. He was pitching well for the Mud Hens, but has signed a major league contract with the Nationals.
Detroit has also added some pitching depth by signing veteran Nick Margevicius to a minor-league contract. He’d been pitching in a Mexican league, and will likely be assigned to Toledo.
The Brewers got just two hits, and fell to the lowly White Sox 8-0 yesterday.
The Brewers host the Cubs tonight. Quinn Priester will start against Ben Brown.
