Now that tourism time has started picking up in the Keweenaw Peninsula. The Houghton County Memorial Airport plans to continue greeting more passengers traveling through the Copper Country. So far in 2025, more than 13,000 people have taken trips leaving on a jetplane out of CMX. Airport Director Dennis Hext says the team is thrilled by the start of the year, and contributes some of the airport’s highest traffic since 2000 to the team’s commitment to convenient reliable air travel for residents and visitors.
Passengers flying in or out of Houghton County Memorial Airport connect to O’Hare International Airport in Chicago. Offering residents of the Copper Country the opportunity to visit family outside of Michigan much easier. O’Hare’s location in the central timezone also can make it easier to recover from jet lag, stopping for a short layover before crossing the Great Lakes into the Upper Peninsula.
Houghton County Memorial Airport has completed several infrastructure projects to improve the facility in recent years. Hext adds the airport plans to continue investing in providing state-of-the-art facilities with work on a modern new terminal.
