Baraga County veterans will join together on Thursday at the Spring Veterans Resource Fair. The fair this year will have several veteran service organizations in attendance to share resources with the community, including the Barga County VSO, MVAA, The Michigan Center for Rural Health, and more. Baraga County VSO Director Doug Gray says the festival will also include a dinner with the veteran community.
Always trying to get the information out there because you have veterans scattered throughout the county and surrounding areas. And it’s just getting the information out there and letting the veterans know I’m here, answering their questions, and helping them apply for different benefits. Even if there are veterans out there who applied for benefits in the past and were denied, they should also come to the office or veterans fair. All these benefits are not only for veterans but for their family members. One of them that I have a lot of that widows do not know about or know that if a veteran passes away, they may be passing up on benefits for themselves. – Douglas Gray, Director, Baraga County VSO
Bringing old and young veterans together can help service members make connections, develop relationships that create support systems, and rejuvenate local VFW, and American Legion groups. The Veterans of Foreign Wars District 15 includes chapters in Baraga, Dickenson, Gogebic, Houghton, Iron, Keweenaw, and Ontonagon counties. The American Legion has halls in Barga and L’Anse in Barga county, and several others throughout the western region. The Barga County Spring Veteran Resource Festival will begin at 3 pm, and dinner with the veterans will start at 5 pm.
