The deadline to upgrade your drivers license or state identification card to REAL ID status is approaching.
REAL IDs carry higher security requirements, and have been available for several years.
Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said late last week that three-quarters of Michigan residents now meet the standard.
Beginning May 7th, you’ll need a REAL ID to board a commercial airline flight, and to enter certain sensitive government facilities.
To see if you already meet the standard, look for a gold star in the upper right hand corner of your license or ID card – either a star within a gold shape of Michigan or a star in a gold circle.
If you don’t have one, you’ll need to make an appointment at a Secretary of State office. You’ll need to bring with you…
- Your current driver’s license or ID.
- Your certified birth certificate with a raised seal or stamp issued by a governmental agency; your valid, unexpired U.S. passport; or an approved citizenship or legal presence document. All documents must be original.
- If your name is different from the name on your birth certificate, bring certified documents, such as marriage licenses or court orders, for every time your name has changed.
Upgrades are free if done by May 7th. Upgrades after the deadline will carry a fee. For more information, click here.
