Rosemary J. Short, 96, of Lake Linden, passed away after a brief illness, on April 14, 2025, at UP Health System-Portage, with her family by her side.
She was born on June 3, 1928 in Rockland, a daughter of Alvin and Eliza (Verville) Spitz.
Rosemary graduated from Rockland High School as the valedictorian of the class of 1946. She attended Northern Michigan where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. She taught for a year in Escanaba before she was married. She moved to Lake Linden where she taught at Lake Linden-Hubbell Schools until her retirement.
She was married to Lloyd V. Short in Rockland on June 14, 1952. He passed away on February 9, 2013.
She was a member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Lake Linden. She was also a founding member of the ADK organization for women educators and Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel. She loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Rosemary was preceded in death by her parents and three siblings-Willard Spitz, Genevieve Milde, and Lawrence “Babe” Spitz.
She is survived by: 6 children-David Short of Lake Linden, Diane (David) Baril of Lake Linden, Bill (Rita) Short of Marquette, Barbara (Michael) Radeka of Lake Linden and Scottsdale, AZ, Dan (Mary Kay) Short of Kingsford, and Elizabeth (Robert) Forget of Oregon, WI; 12 grandchildren-Kristine (Nick) Daavettila, Jeff (Kiira) Baril, Heather Pear, Rachel Pear, Andrew (Amanda) Short, Eliza Short (Steven Petritis), Nick (Kimmy) Radeka and Ben Radeka (Anna Mills), Steve (Gretchen) Short, and Sara (Stephen) Lessard, Tyler (Rachel) Forget and Tristyn (Aaron) Vruwink; 13 great-grandchildren-Isaac and Joshua Daavettila, Alivia and Brennan Baril, Lilah Short, Rowan, Max and Xavier Pear, Kennedy and Grayson Radeka, Lillian and Noah Short, and Noelle Lessard; and other friends and relatives.
Rosemary’s family wishes to thank the staff of Gardenview, Portage Point-Delaware House, and UPHealth System-Portage for the wonderful care she received.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, April 25, 2025 at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Lake Linden with Father Eric Olson to celebrate. There will be no public visitation. Spring burial will be at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Rockland. The Pearce Funeral Home in Lake Linden is in charge of arrangements.
