NHL
The Red Wings will miss the NHL playoffs for the ninth straight year. The single standings point the Canadiens earned in their overtime loss to the Maple Leafs Saturday was enough to freeze Detroit out of the final Eastern Conference wild card berth.
The Wings host the Stars in their home finale tonight, then play their final two games on the road.
NBA
The Pistons closed their regular season with a 140-133 loss to the Bucks yesterday. With their playoff futures already decided, starters from both teams played very little, or not at all. Malik Beasley led Detroit with 23 points. Marcus Sasser had 18 points and 10 assists. Pat Connaughton scored a career-best 43 for Milwaukee, and grabbed 10 rebounds.
The Pistons are seeded sixth in the Eastern Conference, and open the playoffs against the Knocks in New York Saturday at 6:00. Coverage will begin at 5:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Bucks are seeded fifth, and will take on the Pacers Saturday afternoon at 1:00 in Indianapolis.
MLB
The Tigers’ bats went quiet yesterday in a 5-1 loss to the Twins. Spencer Torkelson’s fifth home run of the season accounted for Detroit’s only score. Casey Mize gave up two early runs, then left in the sixth inning as Minnesota plated two more.
The Tigers open a series at Milwaukee tonight. Tarik Skubal will pitch against Tyler Alexander. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers couldn’t defend an early lead, and fell 5-2 to the Diamondbacks yesterday. Both Milwaukee runs scored on a first inning home run by William Contreras. Freddy Peralta pitched into the sixth, and was charged with two runs. Bryan Hudson took the loss in relief.
