The Red Wings will miss the NHL playoffs for the ninth straight year. The single standings point the Canadiens earned in their overtime loss to the Maple Leafs Saturday was enough to freeze Detroit out of the final Eastern Conference wild card berth.
The Wings host the Stars in their home finale Monday, then play their final two games on the road.
College Hockey
Western Michigan University claimed its first national hockey title Saturday night, riding a late surge to a 6-2 victory over Boston University. The Broncos led 3-2 heading into the third period, survived a flurry of Terriers shots early in the third, then reeled off three unanswered goals, including a late empty-netter, to seal the win.
NBA
The Pistons and Bucks wrap up their regular seasons this afternoon in Milwaukee.
No matter what the outcome of today’s game is, each team knows whom their opponent will be in the opening round of the playoffs. The Pistons are seeded sixth in the Eastern Conference, and will face the Knicks. The Bucks are seeded fifth, and will take on the Pacers.
MLB
Jackson Jobe earned his first major league win, as the Tigers blanked the Twins 4-0 Saturday. Jobe allowed just two hits over six innings. Spencer Torkelson homered and drove in three runs.
Those teams play in Minnesota again this afternoon. Casey Mize will start against Simeon Woods Richardson. Coverage will begin at 1:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Diamondbacks scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, and stunned the Brewers 5-4 Saturday evening. Arizona started the rally after Joel Payamps had secured the first out of the inning. They finished it against closer Trevor Magill, who took the loss. Jackson Chourio hit his fifth home run of the season.
The Brewers visit the Diamondbacks again this afternoon. Freddy Peralta will pitch against Zac Gallen.
