
Houghton County seeks to fill the Drain Commissioner vacancy. Earlier in the year it was announced that Houghton County Drain Commissioner John Pekkala plans to retire.
Drain Commissioners are responsible for managing the county’s drainage system, stormwater management, and other resources in the state of Michigan. The position is also responsible for administering laws related to flood protection, stormwater management, and soil erosion.
An appointment committee, made of Judge Fraser Strome, Prosecutor Daniel Helmer, and County Clerk Jennifer Kelly has been created to fill the role. County Drain commissioners in the state are elected positions and hold four-year terms. With terms beginning on January 1st of a new year, following an election. Houghton County will accept applications for the drain commissioner until April 17th.
