NHL
The Red Wings’ playoff hopes suffered another blow last night, with a 4-1 loss to the Panthers. Alex DeBrincat gave Detroit an early lead, but Florida responded with four straight off Cam Talbot. The Wings are still mathematically in the race, but they trail the Canadiens by eight standings points with four regular-season games left to play. They’re tied with the Rangers and Islanders, and two points behind the Blue Jackets.
The Wings visit the Lightning this evening. A loss would eliminate them from the playoffs.
NBA
Cade Cunningham scored 36 points, as the Pistons downed the Knicks 115-106 last night. The game was tied at the end of the third quarter, but Detroit pulled away late. Jalen Duren had 18 points and 13 rebounds.
The Pistons host the Bucks this evening.
Detroit guard Jaden Ivey has been cleared to resume basketball activities. Ivey broke his leg in a game on New Year’s Day. He’ll need at least a couple of weeks of conditioning before he’s ready to return.
The Bucks buried the Pelicans 136-111 last night. Six Milwaukee players scored in double figures, led by Giannis Antetokounmpo with 28 points and 11 rebounds.
MLB
The Tigers had yesterday off, and open a series at Minnesota tonight. Reese Olson will start against David Festa. Coverage will begin at 7:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Rockies scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, and defeated Brewers 7-2 yesterday afternoon. The meltdown spoiled a good first start for newcomer Quinn Priester, who allowed a run over five innings. Joel Payamps was charged with all five of the eighth-inning runs, and took the loss. After scoring 24 runs in the previous two games, Milwaukee collected just four hits.
The Brewers visit the Diamondbacks tonight. Jose Quintana will pitch against Eduardo Rodriguez.
Amateur Hockey
The final game of the local hockey season will be played tomorrow night. The Upper Peninsula Veterans Hockey Club will take on the Minnesota Warriors at 7:00 Dee Stadium. Admission is $5 – active and retired military, police, firefighters, EMS and children under age 12 are admitted free. Money raised will support the Copper Country Veterans Association and local junior hockey leagues.
