Sculptora Borealis' Winning Sculpture at Hancock's inaugural Snow Sculpting Invitational
It took the Copper Country 153 days to break the 300 inch threshold in the 2024-2025 winter. That’s right, after a disappointing 2023-24 winter that brought 153 inches of snow to Keweenaw county. The region has doubled last year’s snow total. On April 2nd, Keweenaw County’s road commission recorded an additional 6.5 inches of snow, officially crossing the three hundred inch mark. Yesterday added another 3 inches to the year bringing the season up to 304 and quarter inches of snow. Last year’s last snowfall was recorded April 4th 2024.
The last winter the Copper Country broke 300 inches of snow fall was in 2000-2001 with a little more than 303 inches of snow. As it stands, according the records from Michigan Technological University, 2024-25 currently ranks as the fourth snowiest winter in the Keweenaw peninsula since recording started in 1890.
The Upper Peninsula will continue to warm up and break out the shorts and t-shirts for spring soon. However the national weather service does list snow as a possibility along with a rain mix on in the 24 hour forecast. So, maybe keep the winter jacket by the door just in case.
