College Basketball
Grand Valley State reigns as champions of NCAA Division II women’s basketball, following a convincing 70-58 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills in the tournament title game last night. Rylie Bisballe scored 13 points, and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Former Escanaba standout Nicole Kamin, who scored 21 in the Lakers’ 68-61 victory over Pittsburgh State in the semifinals, was also named to the All-Tournament team.
College Hockey
In opening-round games at the NCAA Division One Hockey Tournament yesterday…
- At the Manchester Regional, Boston College dispatched Bentley 3-1, and Denver ousted Providence 5-1. The Eagles and Pioneers will play in a quarterfinal tomorrow night.
- At the Saint Louis Regional, Connecticut bounced Quinnipiac 4-1, and Penn State eliminated Maine 5-1. The Huskies will face the Nittany Lions in a quarterfinal tomorrow afternoon.
The other two quarterfinal games will be played today…
- At the Fargo Regional, Western Michigan takes on Massachusetts.
- At the Toledo Regional, Cornell meets Boston University.

At the Great Lakes Hockey League tournament opens in Eagle River, Wisconsin, yesterday…
- The seventh-seeded Calumet Wolverines split their pool games, edging the Mosinee Papermakers 5-4, then falling to the Fond du Lac Bears 8-0.
- The Portage Lake Pioneers routed the Sun Prairie Killer Bees 22-1. They’ll wrap up pool play against the Fox Cities Ice Dogs today at noon.
The winners of the three pools and one wild card team will advance to the semifinals this evening. The championship game will be staged tomorrow.
NHL
The Red Wings entertains the Bruins tonight.
NBA
The Pistons outscored the Cavaliers 133-122 last night. Again playing without Cade Cunningham, who is recovering from a left calf contusion, Tim Hardaway, Jr. led Detroit with 32 points. Ausar Thompson had 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Jalen Duren 16 points and 13 rebounds.
The Pistons visit the Timberwolves tomorrow night.
The Bucks lost their third straight game last night, 116-107 to the Knicks. Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 30 for Milwaukee.
The Bucks host the Hawks tomorrow night.
MLB
Mookie Betts’ three-run homer off Beau Brieske in the bottom of the 10th inning gave the Dodgers an 8-5 victory over the Tigers last night. Detroit had surged ahead with two runs in the top of the 10th, on a Dillon Dingler triple. Brieske was able to get just one out in the bottom of the inning, though, while giving up five runs on four hits. Dingler and Gleyber Torres homered early for Detroit. Torres left the game shortly after his home run. Team officials said he has been suffering from some soreness in his lower ribs.
The Tigers play in L.A. again tonight. Reese Olson will start against Roki Sasaki. Coverage will begin at 8:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit continues to add outfield options. The Tigers purchased the contract of Brewer Hicklen from the Brewers yesterday. Hicklen hit 22 home runs and stole 44 bases at Triple-A Nashville last season. He has been assigned to Toledo.
The Brewers have today off, and play at Yankee Stadium this afternoon. Nestor Cortes will pitch against Max Fried.
