The Keweenaw Community Foundation launches the Bring Back Calumet Initiative Fund. The new special project fund will dedicate money toward revitalizing downtown Calumet. The community-driven effort will focus on preserving Calumet’s rich industrial heritage while supporting economic growth in the village. The first project the Bring Back Calumet initiative fund will support includes work to revitalize the Ruppe building. The project requires urgent action taken to stabilize the structure to prevent further collapse. The initiative has secured a nine-million-dollar fund for historic preservation and will work with the village to stabilize 12 structures, and support 17 business expansions. In 2023 the Bring Back Calumet Task Force was awarded the Governor’s award for historic preservation. The task force includes collaborative efforts by the Calumet DDA, the Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance, the Houghton County Land Bank Authority, the Keweenaw National Historic Park Advisory Commission, and Main Street Calumet.
