High School
Two local girls basketball teams are headed to the state tournament semifinals.
In Division Three, Calumet turned a two-point halftime lead into a 48-33 victory over Sanford Meridian. Bailey Strom led the Copper Kings with 14 points. Kiirsi Johnson added 12 and Millie Loukus scored 10. Halen McLaughlin, who is headed to Lake Superior State next season, netted 24 of the Mustangs’ 33 points.
The Copper Kings improve to 22-5 on the season, and will face Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest tomorrow at noon at the Breslin Center in East Lansing. The Crusaders shut down Sandusky 35-19 in their quarterfinal game last night, to move their record to 20-6. Coverage will begin at 11:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3. Ypsilanti Arbor Prep (15-12) will face Niles Brandywine (27-0) in the other semifinal tomorrow at 2.
In Division Four, Ewen-Trout Creek ousted St. Ignace 47-37. The Panthers improve to 26-1, and will play 21-6 Concord tomorrow at 5:30 at the Breslin Center. Fowler (25-2) and Genesee Christian (24-2) will play in the other Division Four semifinal tomorrow at 7:30.
Gladstone’s tournament run ended with a 56-36 loss to Frankenmuth in a Division Two quarterfinal.
NHL
The fading Red Wings lost 4-1 to the Capitals last night. Dylan Larkin scored for Detroit. Washington put the game away with three third period goals against Petr Mrazek, who made 22 saves.
The Wings have lost eight of their last 10, and visit the Golden Knights Saturday. Coverage will begin at 7:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Pistons visit the Heat tonight. Coverage will begin at 7:05 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Bucks suffered a 103-94 loss to the Warriors last night. Kyle Kuzma led Milwaukee with 22 points.
The Bucks visit the Lakers tomorrow.
MLB
The Tigers shaded the Twins 6-5 yesterday. Matt Manning pitched into the fourth inning, and gave up five runs on seven hits and three walks. Kerry Carpenter had two hits.
The Tigers face the Red Sox today. Casey Mize will start against Richard Fitts.
The Brewers fell to the Mariners 9-3 yesterday. Elvin Rodriguez pitched into the fourth, and allowed four runs on six hits. All of Milwaukee’s runs came on a first-inning homer by Isaac Collins.
The Brewers play the White Sox today. Aaron Civale will pitch against Shane Smith.
