Tomorrow night, the Memorial Union ballroom on Michigan Tech’s campus will be filled with residents celebrating great accomplishments in the community. Sparkplug awards have nominated several projects with large impacts, and people or organizations moving the needle forward for the Copper Country.
This year’s nominees include students from Houghton High School up for Youth Contributor of the Year and a field of wonderful volunteers or community leaders considered for Contributor of the Year. In 2024 the Ahmeek Ice Rink project brought many residents, businesses, and community groups together to support a public space that has served up as many memories as it has goal in the net. The ice rink fundraiser and board replacement at the Emil Aho Memorial rink in Ahmeek competes against other projects like Copper Shores Giving Tuesday, The Keweenaw Co-op’s move to Qunicy Street in Hancock, and Right Start UP’s takeover and opening of the Hancock Community Hub.
Sparkplug Awards take a moment in the Keweeenaw Peninsula’s very busy schedule to celebrate the people places and projects creating a place where communities can thrive. Doors at the Memorial Union Building at Michigan Technological University will open at 5:30 pm. Dinner will begin at 6 pm. The board of directors will then give away the 2025 Sparkplug awards starting at 7 pm tomorrow.
