Recently, the Keweenaw Health Foundation donated 15,000 dollars to support a veteran memorial sign project in Houghton. The donation supports a project led by the VFW 3900 post of Calumet. Veterans hope to complete work and install the sign at the Lake View Veterans Cemetery this spring, in time for service and unveiling on Memorial Day weekend.
The Lakeview Cemetery is known by the veterans as Heroes Hill. And that’s why they wanted a sign that says Heroes Hill for the veterans that are buried there. That section of the cemetery was sold by VFW Post 3900 to the cemetery for a dollar for the use of veterans only. – Art Kreivi, Post Commander, VFW Post 3900 of Calumet
VFW 3900 Post Commander Art Kreivi says it’s important to remember service members. The project, while led by the VFW 3900 post, includes assistance from former members of the American Legion 6100. In the past year the VFW Post brought in members from the legion after their legion folded.
It was always a duel responsibility between the two posts to take care of that section as far as the upkeep and the lighting out there and the monuments have been placed out there. Now it’s pretty much falling on our post 3900 to keep it going and take care of it. – Art Kreivi, Post Commander, VFW Post 3900 of Calumet
Kreivi adds the memorial will draw attention to the veterans section of the cemetery where 72 veterans reside. In the spring the post will begin replacing American flags at gravesides. The post places nearly 1,000 flags at the Lake View Veterans Cemetery each year.
A lot of people go by that part of the cemetery not knowing that that section is just veterans that are buried there, the ones that gave their lives for the country and also the time that they served for the country. And we would like to acknowledge those veterans. – Art Kreivi, Post Commander, VFW Post 3900 of Calumet
During Memorial Day weekend the VFW 3900 post plans to host a remembrance and unveiling ceremony, and will invite the community to celebrate with veterans on May 26th.
