Houghton Portage Township schools will begin work to design the Elementary school extension this summer. Additionally, the school board approved splitting the bond into three series. Superintendent Anders Hill says the decision to split the bond into three, as opposed to two series, seeks to reduce the district’s interest costs on loans. The design works starting in the summer will include series one work for designs at the elementary school, flex space, and utility designs for fire detection, HVAC, and the PA system.
And so that series two would cover work at the middle and high school. And then series three is something that is probably in the future beyond two years. That’s something for more board discussion, trying to listen to our community, take feedback from our community, be responsible, and honor voters. Now, 3,600 people voted and approved our bond and we’re very thankful for that. – Anders Hill, Superintendent, Houghton Portage Township Schools
Several residents in attendance expressed a desire to see the district slow down its plans or put a pause on work. Many feel the project will saddle HPTS with too much additional debt. The millage request passed in November will extend the current millage rate from 2029 to 2031.
