KBOCC and the Biskaabiiyaang Collective will co-host the fourth annual Nanda-Gikendan powwow on Michigan Technological University’s campus this weekend. On Saturday the Indigenous Student Organization, Biskaabiiyaang Collection, and the Keweenaw Bay Ojibwe Community College, partner to host the spring powwow. Powwows bring together Indian country to dance, celebrate, and share in traditional native American culture. Dancers often design the regalia they wear while in the circle.
The event’s first grand entry dance will begin at noon. Later in the afternoon attendees can watch the Deadliest Uncles and Aunties competition, followed by the second grand entry at 6 pm. At 4 pm dancers will take a break to enjoy a feast with the community.
Jon Dowd will act as the arena Director, with Rodney Loonsfoot and LeRoy Gauthier as the master of ceremony. The Wiikwedong Ogitchidaa Society will perform Honor Guard duties and Donald Chosa will lead as the Head Veteran Dancer.
The 4th Annual Seek to Learn Powwow will begin at noon on Saturday at the Gates Tennis Center on Michigan Technological University’s campus.
