The Locks will open early for the shipping season in the great lakes getting underway. Last week the US Army Corps of Engineers Detroit district announced the Poe Lock will open and part of the Soo locks will open on March 21st at 8 am. The shipping industry requested an early season opening based on winter maintenance schedules.
Opening the locks on Friday, says Lakes Carriers Association president James Weakley, will provide relief to the increased pressure on the Great Lakes Navigation System with an influx of foreign vessels, including a Canadian domestic fleet.
The Great Lakes operating season is based on observations of Great Lakes ice coverage. The Locks closed for 2024 on January 16 2025 to undergo critical maintenance. The locks will reopen on Friday at 8 am. Officially starting the 2025 shipping season. The MacArthur Lock will remain closed until April. Those interested in watching a live stream of the opening of the lock can find information for Friday on The USACE Detroit District Facebook page.
