High School
The girls high school basketball tournament continues with quarterfinal games tomorrow.
- Division Four – Ewen-Trout Creek (25-1) will face Saint Ignace (25-1) at 7:00 at Gladstone High School. The winner will face either Byron Center Zion Christian or Concord in the semifinals Thursday.
- Division Three – Calumet (21-5) will play Sanford Meridian (23-3) at 7:00 at Manistique High School. The winner will take on either Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest or Sandusky in the semifinals Thursday.
- Division Two – Gladstone (24-2) will play Frankenmuth (22-4) at 7:00 at Cheboygan High School. The winner will meet either Goodrich or Tecumseh in the semifinals Friday.
College Basketball
The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team fell 83-73 to Lake Superior State in the second round of the NCAA Division II tournament yesterday. Marcus Tomashek scored 23 points for the Huskies, who close their campaign as GLIAC regular-season champions, with a record of 24-8.
The Huskies opened the tourney with an 87-72 victory over Northern Michigan on Saturday. Marcus Tomashek and Pete Calcaterra each scored 22 for the Huskies. Dylan Kuehl netted 20 for NMU.
The Lakers claimed a 76-64 victory over Lincoln in their opening-round game Saturday.
LSSU will face Missouri-Saint Louis for the Midwest regional title tomorrow night.
The NMU women’s team ended its tournament run with a 68-45 loss to Ashland in the round of 32 Saturday.
Grand Valley dispatched Wayne State 87-54 Saturday. The Lakers will host Ashland tonight at 7 in the Midwest regional championship game.
College Hockey
Saint Thomas and Minnesota State will play for the Mason Cup, following victories in the CCHA semifinals Saturday. The Tommies dispatched Bowling Green 3-1. The Mavericks ousted Bemidji State 4-0. The title game will be played Friday in Mankato.
NHL
The Red Wings blanked the Golden Knights 3-0 yesterday. Petr Mrazek made 18 saves. Albert Johansson, Lucas Raymond and Marco Kasper scored for Detroit.
The Wings will visit the Capitals tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Pistons visit the Pelicans tonight. Coverage will begin at 7:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Bucks suffered a 121-105 loss to the Thunder last night. Giannis Antetokounmpo had 21 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists.
The Bucks visit the Warriors tomorrow night.
MLB
The Tigers lost to half of the Orioles 7-1 yesterday. Jack Flaherty pitched into the fifth, and was charged with six runs on seven hits.
The Tigers face the Pirates today. Reese Olson will start against Bailey Falter.
Brandon Woodruff took the mound for the first time in 18 months yesterday, as the Brewers bombed the Guardians 8-2. Woodruff opened the game with one scoreless inning, walking one and striking out one, as he continues his comeback from a major shoulder injury. There’s still no timetable as to when he might be ready to rejoin the rotation. Sal Frelick homered. Andruw Monasterio had three hits and scored three runs.
The Brewers play the Padres today. Logan Henderson will pitch against Wes Benjamin.
