High School
There will be no Upper Peninsula teams in the state boys basketball tournament finals this year. Kingsford bowed out of the Division Two tourney with a 52-40 loss to Romulus Summit Academy North Two in their semifinal game yesterday.
The state finals will be played today:
- Division Four – Wyoming Tri-unity Christian (26-2) vs Fowler (25-3) – 10 am
- Division Three – Arts and Tech Academy of Pontiac (21-1) vs Riverview Gabriel Richard (24-2) – 4:30 pm
- Division Two – Romulus Summit Academy North (24-3) vs Warren Lincoln (22-4) – 6:45 pm
- Division One – East Lansing (27-1) vs Wayne Memorial (25-3) – 12:15
College Basketball
The NMU women’s team held off Hillsdale College 61-56 to win their opening-round game yesterday. Mackenzie Holzwart led a balanced Wildcats attack with 13 points. NMU will face Ashland this afternoon at 5 in Allendale. The winner advancing to the round of 16. Ashland defeated Ferris State 62-50 in their tournament opener yesterday.
In other games involving GLIAC schools, Grand Valley routed Quincy 108-72, and Wayne State advanced with a 77-57 victory over Lewis.
The Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan men’s basketball teams will open the NCAA Division II tournament against each other today. Tip off is at 1:00 in Springfield, Illinois.
In other games involving GLIAC teams, Lake Superior State plays Lincoln, and Ferris State takes on Missouri-St. Louis.
College Hockey
The CCHA tournament semifinals will take place today. Seventh-seed Bemidji State plays at top-seed Minnesota State. Fourth-seed Bowling Green plays at third-seed Saint Thomas. The winners of today’s games will play for the title Friday.
NHL
The fading Red Wings lost 4-2 to the Hurricanes last night. Alex DeBrincat gave Detroit an early lead, but Carolina took command with three goals in the second period Petr Mrazek. Michael Rasmussen added a late goal.
Detroit has lost seven of their last eight games, and will host the Golden Knights tomorrow afternoon. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Pistons visit the Thunder tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Bucks host the Pacers today.
MLB
The Tigers and Pirates played to an 8-8 tie last night. Keider Montero tossed four shutout innings. Dillon Dingler, Ryan Kreidler and Max Anderson homered.
The Tigers face the Phillies today. Tarik Skubal will start against Zack Wheeler.
Detroit will start the season without two important players. Matt Vierling is recovering from a rotator cuff strain. Parker Meadows has been sidelined by a nerve issue in his arm. Manager A.J. Hinch confirmed the news yesterday, but held out hope the two could rejoin the team sooner, rather than later. Hinch added that he expects outfielder Wenceel Perez to be ready for opening day. Perez has been battling lower back stiffness.
The Brewers routed the Giants 11-5 yesterday. Starter Nestor Cortes struggled, pitching into the fourth, and giving up three runs on seven hits, including two home runs. He also struck out seven. Christian Yelich, Joey Ortiz, Marco Dinges and Jared Oliva homered.
The Brewers will play the Angels today. Tobias Myers will pitch against Jack Kochanowicz.
