109th district representative Karl Bohnak supports legislation to restart a gun safety devices tax exemption program.
On Thursday Representative Bohnak noted to remove sales taxes collected for gun safety and other firearm safety device purchases. HB 4025 and 4026 aim to eliminate a barrier to gun-owners purchasing firearm safety equipment and increase firearm security in the home.
Representative Bohnak says gun safety can be expensive with lock boxes that can cost over 100 dollars, and safes for larger storage costing much more. By removing the sales tax on purchases of gun safety equipment gun owners will save money at the register. In 2023 the state of Michigan passed the Safe Storage Act, requiring gun owners to secure firearms away, where children cannot easily access a gun.
If the bill package passes it will reinstate a temporary 2024 tax exemption program for purchases of trigger locks, firearm safety devices, and gun safes. Glass-faced cabinets and firearm displays do not fall under firearm safety device language.
