The Keweenaw Community Foundation announces six organizations will benefit from the Copper Shores Community Wellness and Outdoor Recreation Fund. The Copper Shores Outdoor Recreation Fund, managed by the Keweenaw Community Foundation and supported by the Copper Shores Community Health Foundation, awards annual grants to projects that aim to enhance outdoor spaces and recreation opportunities in the Copper Country. This year’s awards will support the creation of a outdoor splash pad in Laurium, and help The Copper Country Ski Tigers buy new equipment.
The fund’s largest award to the Village of Laurium will support the splash pad project with 20,000 dollars, as a part of the village’s Get Active initiative. Recently Village Manager Ian Lewis shared the Splashing Through Laurium Splash Pad project will take form near the George Gipp Recreation Area. Design work for the project has started, and the village has plans to raise additional funds for the project. Lewis expects work will begin in the summer.
Other grant awards will support trail recreation in the Keweenaw peninsula. The Keweenaw Land Trust will use a 5,000 dollar grant to improve ADA accessibility at the Boston Pond and Paavola Wetlands. Swedetown Trails will also use funds to support ADA upgrades. Swedetown’s 5,000 dollars will create new handicapped parking and a universal access trail.
