High School
A number of local high school hockey players have been honored by the Michigan High School Hockey Coaches Association.
- Members of the Division Three All-State First Team include forwards Brit Heinonen from Jeffers and Jace DeForge from Houghton, and defenseman Hudson Markham from Houghton.
- Members of the Second Team include forwards Benton Rajala from Jeffers, Connor Arko from Houghton, and Nathan Londo from Calumet, along with Calumet defenseman Ted Loukus and Jeffers goalie Kasen Helminen.
- Honorable Mention votes went to forwards Brogan Turner from Jeffers and Jay Halonen from Houghton, and defenseman Jack Rudak from Houghton.
At the state high school hockey championships Saturday, all of the top-seeded teams won titles…
- In Division Three, Orchard Lake St. Mary’s blanked Cranbrook Kingswood 3-0.
- In Division Two, Flint Powers Catholic shaded Livonia Stevenson 3-2 in overtime.
- In Division One, Detroit Catholic Central dispatched Howell 4-1.
The Forest Park boys basketball team claimed a regional title Saturday with a 53-42 victory over Bessemer. The Trojans will play Pickford in a quarterfinal game Tuesday at 7:00 at Gladstone High School. The Panthers advanced with a 68-46 win over Harbor Springs Harbor Light Christian Thursday.
Girls regional basketball semifinals will be played Monday night.
- In Division Four, Hancock will face Ewen-Trout Creek at 7:00 at Houghton High School.
- In Division Three, Calumet will play Menominee at 7:00 at Escanaba High School. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.

College Hockey
The Michigan Tech hockey team’s season ended with a 4-0 loss at Bowling Green Saturday. The Falcons swept the opening-round CCHA playoff series 2-0, and advance to the semifinals this coming Saturday. Minnesota State and St. Thomas will join them. The opening-round series between Bemidji State and Augustana will be decided today.
College Basketball
The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team couldn’t climb out of an early hole, and lost to Northern Michigan 69-68 in the semifinals of the GLIAC tournament Saturday. The 20th-ranked Huskies trailed by 17 a third of the way into the second half. Marcus Tomashek scored 28 for the Huskies, but missed a three-point attempt with two seconds remaining that would have given Tech the lead. Dylan Kuehl led the Wildcats with 26 points.
Northern will face Lake Superior State in an all-U.P. title game this afternoon at 2:00 at the SDC. The winner of that game will get an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament. As regular-season champion, MTU could also get an invite. Pairings will be announced this morning at 11:00.
Grand Valley State and Ferris State will play for the GLIAC women’s title this afternoon in Allendale.
GLHL
The Calumet Wolverines fell 10-3 to the Mosinee Papermakers Saturday night. Former Calumet High School goalie Ian Carroll made 22 saves for the Papermakers.
The Portage Lake Pioneers routed the Fox Cities Ice Dogs 12-4 Saturday evening.
NHL
The Red Wings have dropped five straight, and visit the Senators Monday. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Pistons suffered a tight 115-110 loss to the Warriors Saturday evening. Cade Cunningham scored 31 points. Jalen Duren collected another double-double, with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
The Pistons visit the Trail Blazers tonight. Coverage will begin at 8:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Bucks dropped an even tighter 111-109 decision to the Magic Saturday. Giannis Antetokounmpo had 37 points and 11 rebounds.
The Bucks welcome the Cavaliers tonight.
MLB
The Tigers collected just four hits in a 5-0 loss to half of the Blue Jays Saturday. Jackson Jobe pitched into the fourth, and allowed no runs on just one hit. Brant Hurter relieved him, and was charged with all five Toronto runs.
The Tigers face the Pirates this afternoon. Tarik Skubal will start against Andrew Heaney. Coverage will begin at 1:00 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers lost to the Angels 6-2 Saturday. Christian Yelich hit his first home run of the spring. Starter Elvin Rodriguez pitched into the third inning, and was charged with four runs.
Milwaukee will face the Royals today. Aaron Civale will pitch against Noah Cameron.
Nordic Skiing
At the U.P. Health System Great Bear Chase Saturday…
- Sam Holt from Minneapolis won the 50k Skiathlon, with Estonian Hendrik Peterson from Northern Michigan University second. Julia Junkkala from Sastamala, Finland via Michigan Tech won the women’s competition.
- Caden Albrecht, from Stillwater, Minnesota via MTU, claimed the 50k Classic, 14 minutes ahead of runner-up Alex Gude from Minneapolis. Elspeth Ronnander from Saint Paul claimed the women’s crown.
- Ryan Thieme from Green Bay medaled in the 50k Freestyle, six minutes better than Paul Cigan of Hayward, Wisconsin. Marquette’s Hannah Derby was the top women’s finisher.
- Parker Courte-Rathwell, from Mont-Tremblant, Quebec via MTU, won the 25k Classic, with Duluth’s Mark Goettel second. Abby Scheller from Champlin, Minnesota earned the women’s title.
- Luke Kubasta from Madison claimed the 25k Freestyle, 20 seconds ahead of Ty Ouradnik from Oak Creek, Wisconsin. Lena Mitkey from Kohler, Wisconsin won the women’s title.
- Jacob Stiele from Prior Lake, Minnesota, medaled in the new 20k Skiathlon, with Dylan West of Minneapolis second. Gretta Scholz of Minneapolis won the women’s crown, and placed third overall.
- Marlow Hunter of Madison took the 10k Classic, with Hancock’s Vincent Gemelli second. Ayla Miller from Pelkie won the women’s title.
- Gideon Talbot of Atlantic Mine won the 10k Freestyle, ahead of Paul Isaacson of Mohawk. Myla Pietila from Calumet took the women’s title.
