The Copper Country ISD’s CTE program expands student learning opportunities and offers youth opportunities to make an impact on the community. The Copper Country ISD’s CTE Construction Technology students continue work on the New Home Build Project. Over the past two years, students enrolled in the construction technology program with the Career and Technical Education Center have worked to construct a 1700-square-foot home featuring three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a sauna, and a car garage. The students were successful in completing the project not only on time but nine months early.
While sharing the students’ accomplishments with local representatives, Greg Markkanen, Dave Prestin, Senator Ed McBroom, and Invest UP CEO Marty Fittante, on a tour of the home CCISD Director of CTE programs Corey Soumis highlighted the education center’s goal to fill high demand positions in skilled trades by offering education opportunities to the communities students. He says the Career and Technical Education Center isn’t just building a home, it’s building up students with the skills they’ll need to succeed in careers such as construction technology. And offer them opportunities to concurrently learn the skills to run a successful trade business or manage key components of a large project. The 200000 dollar project was backed financially by Build UP with a zero percent interest loan. The program will pay back into the Build UP program after the home sells, which leaders anticipate should happen over the summer.
Representative Markkanen says the CTE program is vital to providing students access to multiple career paths beyond avenues of higher education institutions.
Senator McBroom adds its vital to expand CTE education opportunities in the state to rejuvenate a strong technical workforce that can help communities address challenges and needs such as housing.
The Copper Country ISD CTE Construction Technology program plans to begin work soon after selling its house in Houghton. The program hopes to take on projects that will expand housing and education opportunities in Hancock and Baraga County.
