Many incredible performances travel to the Keweenaw Peninsula as a part of the Rozsa Center’s lineup each season. Sometimes a small group takes the stage or even a loud band from the other side of the globe. This weekend the Yamato drummers arrive in Houghton, during their international tour, to share taiko drumming with the audience. Rozsa Center executive director Kiersten Birondo says the group arrives in the morning on Saturday.
And then it’s gone time. They’re gonna do everything from rolling the drums out of the trucks to making sure the lights are all set and the sound is perfect. And it is all going to happen that day. It’s a remarkable thing to behold. We have a wonderful production manager who is preparing to make sure that everybody is set and ready to experience this wonderful show. – Kiersten Birondo, Executive Director, Rozsa Center
A lot of effort goes into setting up such a large show in such a short amount of time. The Rozsa Center’s stage crew will help the band roll out the drums. Including one that’s over two meters wide and made from a single tree.
And it’s so exciting to get to be part of that international tour that’s going all over the world. And they are going to be here with over 40 drums. And the thing that I think is amazing is, the biggest drum that they’re bringing is two meters wide. It weighs over a thousand pounds and is made from a single tree. Which is just remarkable. And it takes, I like just imagining the amount of physical strength that it takes just to play this instrument is remarkable. And so this is going to be musical and beautiful and incredibly physically active. All of the people who are here doing this drumming work are athletes. – Kiersten Birondo, Executive Director, Rozsa Center
Birondo’s excitement for another fun show at the Rozsa Center hopes to bring many people from the local community to the Rozsa Center. She also hopes attendees can make it from further away too. Adding that tickets are selling fast for the Yamato Drummers.
Because it’s a big show, if anybody is hoping to have, or make a real evening of it, and maybe go downtown, have some dinner. We are going to have shuttles going from downtown to the Rozsa to help people with parking and to help folks with being able to just really enjoy a full evening here, and you can find details about that on our website. – Kiersten Birondo, Executive Director, Rozsa Center
A free shuttle will be available to take attendees from downtown Houghton to the show. Shuttle services will begin at 6:30 pm, and pick up from the Lakeshore Center and Portage lake District Library. Tickets have a face value of 38 dollars, though the show is a part of the Pay as you are able to program with the Rozsa Center. The Yamato Drummers of Japan show at the Rozsa Center will start at 7:30 pm on Saturday. Find ticket and show information here.
