High School
The Jeffers High School hockey team is headed to the state semifinals. The Jets blanked Sault Ste. Marie 3-0 in their quarterfinal game in Marquette yesterday. They join Alpena, Orchard Lake St. Mary’s and Cranbrook Kingswood in the semifinals Friday in Plymouth. Seedings and the game schedule should be announced today.
The Division Four MHSAA bowling finals were staged yesterday in Muskegon. Logan Cadeau from the L’Anse High School team finished 22nd out of the 56 competitors.
Nordic Skiing
At the Michigan Nordic Skiing State Championships at the Tech Trails yesterday, in the Pursuit competition…
- Birk Seagren from the Copper Country Ski Tigers took third place in the High School Boys division. Olin Kasperowicz of the Vaasa Raptors claimed the title.
- Monet Argeropoulos from the Superiorland Ski club won the High School Girls division. Rayna Towles from the Ski Tigers finished sixth.
- Gideon Talbot of the Ski Tigers claimed the Middle School Boys title. Jonathan Eikenberry of the Tigers placed fourth.
- Ava Higley of the Crystal Nordic Ski Club took the Middle School Girls crown. Ruth Talbot of the Ski Tigers finished 5th.

College Basketball
Marcus Tomashek scored 30 points as the Michigan Tech men’s basketball team defeated Parkside 71-63 Saturday. Gabe Smith added 21 points. The victory clinched sole possession of first place for the Huskies in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season.
As the top seed in the GLIAC tournament, the Huskies will host eighth-seed Roosevelt University in the playoff opener Wednesday.
The Tech women’s team fell 72-56 at Parkside Saturday. Isabella Lenz scored 13 points.
The Huskies will open the GLIAC tournament at Grand Valley State, which is ranked second in the nation.
A late rally lifted the Northern Michigan University men’s team to a 76-75 victory at Purdue Northwest Saturday. The Wildcats scored the final 10 points of the game to clinch home-court advantage in the GLIAC tournament. Dylan Kuehl scored 18.
The Wildcats will entertain Grand Valley State in their tournament opener Wednesday.
The NMU women’s team closed its regular season with an 81-66 win at Purdue Northwest. Jacy Wiesbrod scored 23.
The Wildcats will host Saginaw Valley State in their GLIAC tournament opener Wednesday.
College Hockey
The Michigan Tech hockey team closed its regular season with a 2-1 loss at Saint Thomas Saturday evening. Jack Works scored the Huskies’ only goal. Ryan Manzella made 34 saves.
Tech is seeded fifth in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs. They’ll face fourth-seed Bowling Green Friday, Saturday and Sunday (if necessary) in Ohio.
Northern Michigan closed its season in wild fashion, skating to a 4-4 tie at Ferris State, before winning the bonus CCHA standings point in a shootout. The two teams scored three goals in the final 66 seconds of regulation. Danny Ciccarello’s game-tying goal came with six seconds remaining, after a lengthy officials review of the play. After a scoreless overtime, Ciccarello scored in the eighth round of the shootout to secure the win.
Great Lakes Hockey League
The Calumet Wolverines downed the De Pere Deacons 5-2 Saturday.
The Portage Lake Pioneers entertain the Deacons today at 1:00 at Dee Stadium.
NBA
The Pistons shut down the Nets 115-94 Saturday night. Jalen Duren had 18 points and 11 rebounds. Tobias Harris and Malik Beasley also scored 18 each.
The Pistons visit the Jazz tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 8:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Bucks outscored the Mavericks 132-117 Saturday night. Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 29.
The Bucks visit the Hawks Tuesday.
NHL
The Red Wings lost 5-3 to the Blue Jackets in their NHL Stadium Series outdoor game at Ohio Stadium in Columbus. Alex DeBrincat’s second goal of the game tied the score late in the third period, but the Jackets scored twice in the final three minutes to claim the win. Patrick Kane also scored for Detroit. Cam Talbot made 16 saves.
The Wings host the Hurricanes Tuesday. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
MLB
The Tigers edged the Phillies 1-0 Saturday. Casey Mize turned in three scoreless innings, and Keider Montero added two. Gleyber Torres singled home Zach McKinstry in the third inning with Detroit’s only run.
The Tigers face the Pirates today. Jackson Jobe will start against Jared Jones.
Another Tiger has been sidelined with an injury. Outfielder Parker Meadows is suffering from a nerve issue in his upper right arm. He’s out indefinitely.
The Brewers outscored the Rangers 9-4 Saturday. Brice Turang, Rhys Hoskins, Joey Ortiz and William Contreras homered.
Milwaukee will face the Guardians today. Grant Anderson will pitch against Slade Cecconi.
Christian Yelich was in the lineup Saturday – his first action since undergoing back surgery last year.
Dogsled Racing
Michael Bestgen maintained his lead in the CopperDog 150 after stage two Saturday morning, but the margin narrowed. Three-time champion J.R. Anderson turned in the best run of the day, and pulled to within 5:44 seconds of the lead. First-timer Haleigh Bonk had the days second-best run, and is 15:37 off the pace.
Stage three of the 150 begins this morning in Copper Harbor. Mushers should begin arriving at the finish line in downtown Calumet shortly after noon.
The two-stage CopperDog 80 also ends today. Lynne Witte holds a 71-second lead over Joanne Fortier.
At the CopperDog 15 sprint in Copper Harbor Saturday, Jake Golton took the title, covering the course at 14.8 miles per hour. Geri Minard finished 82 seconds off the pace.
