High School
In boys high school basketball tournament district finals last night…
Division Four, District 98 – Dollar Bay-Tamarack City claimed the title with a 51-42 victory over Baraga. The Blue Bolts will face Bessemer in a regional semifinal Tuesday at 7:00 at Houghton High School. The Speedboys eliminated Wakefield-Marenisco 56-55.
- Division Four District 100 – Forest Park dispatched Norway 58-35. The Trojans will play North Dickinson in a regional semifinal Tuesday at Kingsford. The Nordics dispatched Rapid River 79-47 to win their district.
In the final game of the girls regular season last night…
- Calumet downed Hancock 48-33. Jackie Kiilunen led the Copper Kings with 16 points. Alecia Aho netted 11 for the Bulldogs.
The Jeffers hockey team faces Sault Ste. Marie in a Division Three tournament quarterfinal this afternoon. The puck drops at 1 at Lakeview Arena in Marquette. The Jets carry a record of 23-4-0 into the contest. The Blue Devils are 12-13-1 on the season.
The Division Four MHSAA bowling finals will be staged today in Muskegon. Logan Cadeau from the L’Anse High School team will be competing.
Nordic Skiing
At the Michigan Nordic Skiing State Championships at the Tech Trails yesterday, in the Sprint competition…
- Birk Seagren from the Copper Country Ski Tigers took first place in the High School Boys division. Augie Hamlin placed sixth.
- Monet Argeropoulos from the Superiorland Ski club won the High School Girls division. Rayna Towles from the Ski Tigers finished eighth.
- Gideon Talbot of the Ski Tigers claimed the Middle School Boys title. Jonathan Eikenberry of the Tigers placed fourth.
- Ava Higley of the Crystal Nordic Ski Club took the Middle School Girls crown. Ruth Talbot of the Ski Tigers finished 10th.

College Basketball
Both Michigan Tech basketball teams conclude their regular seasons at Parkside today. A victory by the men’s team would guarantee them sole possession of first place in the GLIAC for the regular season.
Both Northern Michigan squads wrap up their regular campaigns today at Purdue Northwest.
College Hockey
A late comeback fell short, as the Michigan Tech hockey team fell 4-3 to Saint Thomas last evening. The Huskies were down 4-0 when coach Joe Shawhan pulled the goalie with seven minutes remaining. Elias Jansson, Rylan Brown and Logan Morrell each scored to narrow the gap, but the Tommies held on for the win. The Huskies end their regular season with at Saint Thomas tonight.
Ferris State scored three goals in the final 10 minutes to close out a 5-1 victory over Northern. Billy Renfrew scored the Wildcats’ only goal – his first of the season. NMU wraps up its season at Ferris State tonight.
Great Lakes Hockey League
The Calumet Wolverines host the De Pere Deacons tonight at 9:30 at the Colosseum.
The Portage Lake Pioneers entertain the Deacons tomorrow at 1:00 at Dee Stadium.
NBA
The Pistons’ eight-game losing streak ended with a 134-119 loss to the Nuggets last night. Malik Beasley led Detroit with 16 points.
The Pistons host the Nets tonight.
The Bucks visit the Mavericks tonight.
NHL
The Red Wings face the Blue Jackets again today, in an NHL Stadium Series outdoor game at Ohio Stadium in Columbus. Coverage will begin at 5:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
MLB
The Tigers lost 10-7 to half of the Blue Jays yesterday. Reese Olson gave up two first-inning home runs. Kerry Carpenter homered for Detroit.
The Tigers face the Phillies today. Casey Mize will start against Aaron Nola.
The news about Tigers outfielder Matt Vierling is not good. He’s been diagnosed with a strained right rotator cuff. He’ll need rest, and will not be ready for opening day.
The Brewers lost to the Giants 9-2 yesterday. Freddy Peralta allowed three runs over two innings. Caleb Durbin hit a home run.
The Brewers face the Rangers this afternoon. Tobias Myers will pitch against Kumar Rocker.
Dogsled Racing
The 15th running of the CopperDog 150 began in unusually blustery conditions last night in downtown Calumet. A hardy crowd gathered despite the snow, wind and plunging temperatures, as competitors in the CopperDog 150, the CopperDog 80 and the CopperDog 30 hit the trail.
- Race veteran Larry Fortier won the single-stage CopperDog 30, 5:22 ahead of Martha Schouweiler. Newcomer Milly Evavold placed third.
- Another veteran, Lynne Witte, leads the two-stage CopperDog 80, with a narrow 1:11 advantage over Joann Fortier. That race will conclude tomorrow.
- Mike Bestgen turned in the best time in the opening leg of the three-stage CopperDog 150, 13:35 better than former champion J.R. Anderson. Haleigh from the Mushing Club at Michigan Tech is third. Stage two of the 150 will begin this morning at 9:00 in Eagle Harbor, and end this afternoon in Copper Harbor.
