Everyone can donate. And everyone can help save up to three lives. Blood donations to local blood centers stay local and help medical professionals care for accident victims and perform vital surgeries. The Upper Peninsula Regional Blood Center says there is a critical need for a continuous blood supply for 12 of the region’s hospitals.
Like if you donate up there, we’re able to test it and deliver it back to the hospitals. Ready to use. – Nicole Mattila, Blood Collections Coordinator, Upper Peninsula Regional Blood Center
UPRBC Coordinator Nicole Mattila adds that the center makes it easy for the community to set up donation drives or set up an appointment to donate. Many organizations and schools throughout the year will host blood drives to encourage residents to donate. Mattila also says residents can make a regular donation if a site isn’t nearby locally, at the regional blood center’s Hancock location.
The need for blood is critical to the function of hospitals, especially in rural settings. People with type O negative blood are universal donors, and A negative blood can be used by patients with type A and AB.
