High School
The Jeffers High School hockey team is headed to the state quarterfinals. The Jets buried Houghton 5-1 last night, to win their first regional title since 1977. Brit Heinonen’s first-period goal gave Jeffers an early lead. The teams traded tallies in the second frame, with Brogan Turner scoring for the Jets, and Carter Campioni netting his first of the year for the Gremlins. Benton Rajala’s natural hat trick in the third period put the game away for the Jets.
Jeffers will face Sault Ste. Marie in the state quarterfinals Saturday at 1:00 at Lakeview Arena in Marquette.
In girls regular season basketball last night…
- Houghton lost to Ewen-Trout Creek 40-26. Bree Besonen scored 19 for the Panthers, and Emma Besonen added 10. Eva Gerard had 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Gremlins.
- Calumet dismantled Iron Mountain 73-46. Jess Anderson scored 17 for the Copper Kings.
- Hancock got past West Iron County 27-21.
- Lake Linden-Hubbell shaded L’Anse 54-50.
- Dollar Bay-Tamarack City v Wakefield-Marenisco – no report.
- Jeffers shut down Chassell 57-17.

The Bucks fell to the Rockets 100-97 last night. Giannis Antetokounmpo had 27 points and 10 rebounds.

NHL
The Red Wings spotted the Wild a two-goal lead, then roared from behind to claim a 3-2 victory last night. Vladimir Taresanko scored Detroit’s first goal. Simon Edvinsson netted the other two. Cam Talbot made 22 saves.
The Wings host the Blue Jackets tomorrow night. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit will finish the season without Andrew Copp. Three days after he was injured in a fight during a game against the Wild, Copp underwent surgery to repair his left pectoral tendon yesterday. The typical recovery period is four to six months.
MLB
The Tigers dropped an 8-7 Grapefruit League decision to the Orioles yesterday. Ben Malgeri and Riley Greene homered for Detroit. Starter Jackson Jobe went two innings, and gave up a two-run homer.
The Tigers face the Twins this afternoon. Tarik Skubal will start against Andrew Morris.
Detroit outfielder Parker Meadows has been sidelined by inflammation in his upper right arm. An examination revealed no structural damage, and he’ll be re-evaluated late this week.
The Brewers outslugged the Guardians 9-6 in Cactus League play yesterday. Jake Bauers and Jared Oliva homered for the Crew.
The Brewers split their squad for games against the Dodgers and Diamondbacks this afternoon.
