Communities across the western Upper Peninsula are reaffirming their support for continued development for Highland Copper’s Copperwood Mine.
A joint release from Highland Copper and InvestUP notes that board members from Ironwood Township, Wakefield Township, Erwin Township, the Gogebic County Board of Commissioners and the Gogebic County Road Commission have all recently unanimously approved resolutions of support for the Copperwood Mine.
Gogebic County Commission Chair Dan Siirila said his board feels the developers have been transparent about the process. Commissioners cited the potential economic boost the mine would provide, along with potential improvements in roads and broadband internet service.
The group Protect the Porkies opposes the mine, which developers say is already fully permitted. Northern Michigan University recently withdrew its endorsement, with President Brock Tessman saying that the mine project no longer aligns with NMU’s values.
The mine is located just south of the southern boundary of Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park.
Highland Copper estimates the project would create more than 700 direct and indirect jobs during its construction and operation.
