The United States Postal Service’s Iron Mountain Processing and Distribution Center will remain in operation – for now.
U.S. Senator Gary Peters says he was informed by Postmaster General Louis DeJoy of the decision on Friday.
The Postal Service had initially proposed closing the center, and sending all mail from our region to Green Bay to be processed. Peters, First District U.S. Representative Jack Bergman, and other state lawmakers had objected, fearing the longer distance would result in delayed service.
There are reports that President Donald Trump is considering a direct government takeover of the Postal Service. If successful, the Iron Mountain center could again be at risk.
