College Hockey
The Michigan Tech hockey team dropped a 3-2 decision to Ferris State in their final home game of the season Saturday night. Early goals by Elias Jansson and Marcus Pederson built a 2-0 first period lead, but the Huskies couldn’t make it stand up. Derek Mullahy made 22 saves, and took the loss in net.
The late comeback fell just short, as the NMU hockey squad fell 4-3 to St. Thomas in their home finale Saturday. Jesse Tucker, Jakob Peterson and Matthew Argentina scored for the Wildcats.
College Basketball
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team dropped a 73-63 decision at Roosevelt University in Chicago Saturday. Alyssa Wypych scored 18 for the Huskies.
The 22nd-ranked Tech men’s team dispatched the Lakers 82-56. Gabe Smith led a balanced Huskies attack with 16 points. Tech remains in sole possession of first place in the GLIAC, with games at Purdue Northwest on Thursday and Parkside on Saturday to wrap up the regular season.
Both NMU teams had the weekend off.
Nordic Skiing
At the NCAA Central Regional Championships on the Al Quaal Trails in Ishpeming, the 7.5k classic event was held on Saturday
- Northern Michigan dominated the men’s race, taking three of the top four positions. Luke Fricker outpaced Kristoffer Karsrud by less than two seconds to earn the title. Wes Campbell from Michigan Tech placed fifth.
- NMU and MTU combined to take the top six positions in the women’s event. Merle Richter of the Wildcats finished first, with Tech’s Marie Wangen second.

Great Lakes Hockey League
The Portage Lake Pioneers routed the Fox Cities Ice Dogs 6-2 Saturday night.
The Calumet Wolverines fell 5-3 to the Dane County Dairy Kings Saturday.
NBA
The Pistons visit the Hawks this evening.
The Bucks entertain the Heat today.
NHL
The Red Wings couldn’t hold a late lead, and fell to the Wild 4-3 in overtime Saturday. Goals by Alex De Brincat, Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond pushed Detroit to a 3-1 lead early in the third period. Minnesota tied the game, then won it when Marco Rossi found the net in the extra period. Cam Talbot made 35 saves in the loss.
The Wings host the Ducks this evening. Coverage will begin at 5:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
MLB
The Tigers came from five runs down to edge the Phillies 7-6 in their Grapefruit League opener Saturday. Starter Kenta Maeda struck out four over two hitless, scoreless innings. Matt Manning relieved him, and was charged with three runs. Justice Bigbie capped the comeback when he singled home Carlos Mendoza in the bottom of the ninth.
The Tigers will face the Yankees today. Casey Mize will start against Sean Boyle.
Vinny Capra’s three-run shot in the bottom of the ninth gave the Brewers an 8-7 win over the Reds in their Cactus League debut Saturday. It was his second homer of the game, and he drove in six runs. Ernesto Martinez, Jr. also homered.
The Brewers play the Rockies today. Aaron Ashby will pitch against Kyle Freeland.
Milwaukee added some outfield depth by signing journeyman Manuel Margot to a minor league deal. Margot batted .238 for the Twins last season.
